IVF TREATMENT PROCESS

IVF Treatment Process

Details of IVF treatment process:

In Vitro Fertilization treatment process or IVF Treatment Process includes fertilization of an egg outside the body, i.e., it is a process of combining woman's egg and man's sperm in a laboratory dish.

In the process of a normal pregnancy, a male's sperm penetrates a woman's egg through the process of mating and fertilization takes place inside her body after ovulation takes place (ovulation is a process of release of matured eggs from the ovaries). This is known as normal or unassisted conception.

However, in some cases, some women are unable to conceive through the natural conception process. In this case, after the failure of various less expensive techniques, some women may decide to go for IVF Treatment Process.

Define IVF treatment?

IVF Process is one of the most common and effective technique to help women to conceive. It is a form of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART).

The babies who are conceived with the help of In Vitro Fertilization are known as Test Tube Babies.

IVF TREATMENT PROCESS:

IVF treatment Process involves the following five steps:

Step 1: Inhibiting the natural menstrual cycle

Women are given a dose of medicine known as fertility drugs for about 2 weeks generally through injections so as to increase the ovulation.

In normal condition, a woman produces one egg every month. But the fertility drugs ask the ovaries to produce several eggs in a month.

During this period, the woman goes through regular transvaginal ultrasound so that the ovaries can be examined on a regular basis and several blood tests are also performed to keep track of the hormone level.

Step 2: Retrieval of eggs

Follicular aspiration is a kind of minor surgical process which is performed to remove the eggs from the woman's body.

During the surgery, the woman is medicated, so she does not feel the pain. With the help of images obtained from the ultrasound, a thin needle is inserted through the vagina into the ovaries and the sacs containing eggs. The needle is connected to a suction device which pulls the egg out one at a time. The same process is repeated to the other ovary.

The woman may suffer from minor cramps after the surgery, but it will go within a day or a two.

In case if a woman is unable to produce any eggs, then a process called pelvic laparoscopy( surgery to examine pelvic organs) is performed to collect the eggs from the woman's body.

Step 3: Insemination and Implantation

Under the IVF treatment process, the man's sperm is made to come in contact with the woman's best quality eggs. This is known as insemination.

After this, the egg and the sperm are kept in a chamber containing all the favorable conditions for the fertilization of the egg.

Generally, the sperm enters the egg few hours after the process of insemination. In some cases if the chance of fertilization is low, the sperm is directly injected into the egg, this is known as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection(ISI). Step 4: Embryogenesis

IVF Treatment Process

IVF procedure step by step (second last step): Embryogenesis is the process of development of the embryo.

When the division of the fertilized egg starts, it becomes an embryo. Within about 5-6 days a normal embryo has all the cells which are actively dividing.

In some cases, if the couple is having a risk of passing a genetic disorder to a child then they may go for Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (Ph.D.). In this process after 3-4 days of fertilization, the Laboratory scientists remove a single cell from each embryo and test the material for any genetic disorder.

Step 5: Transfer of Embryo

The transfer of embryo takes place after 3-5 days of egg retrieval.
In this process, a thin tube called catheter which contains the embryo is inserted into the woman's vagina through the cervix which is taken up into the womb. If the implantation of the embryo is done in the linings of the womb and it grows, the pregnancy results. This sum's the IVF treatment process.

More than one embryos are also placed which results in twins etc. The number of embryos to be placed also depends on the age of the women.
